FREE Educational Websites for kids that are worth visiting
Starfall
Starfall is quite popular with students and teachers alike. Many games and reading exercises for pre-k through 2nd grade students. They have added math, too. Check it out. The games are simple to figure out, and the content is organized so you can pinpoint exactly what you want the child to work on.
ABCya
Another very popular site with the students AND teachers. Cute educational games for kids K-5. Everything is organized by grade level and there are MANY options for each level. They have letters, phonics, reading, math, spelling, telling time, keyboarding, money, maps and more. This is also available as an app for ipads, ipod touches, and iphones.
PBSkids
Wow. Thats all I can say about this site. Kids love it! There are videos, games, stories and tons of activities for younger students. The games are all categorized based on PBS shows. There are many choices, and something for everyone on this site. They update the site often. There is a site for parents, one for teachers, and of course for kids! They have apps available for the ipods/ipads/iphones
Disney Online
There is a Disney Jr site and one for older kids. They both offer many fun educational games based on Disney movies/cartoons. Kids love to play the games and dont realize they are learning. The main Disney Games site is not orgranized by age or by content, simply by Disney show. Disney Jr. is easier to choose a specific skill to have the student learn, with many choices for each. Kids really enjoy this site.
Fun Brain
This site has been around for a long time, but they update it often. They have the games sorted by category, but not really by age/grade. This site is good for all ages K-5, and even older kids enjoy it, but I am not sure how educational it would be for them.
Scholastic
Scholastic has many apps that go along with their website. The website has stories, games, videos and printable activities. There are various sites, one is for ages 3-7 which is called Family Playground. Then the site for 8-12 year olds is called The Stacks. They have games, books, blogs, videos and even message boards on this site. The best site for teachers is called Computer Lab Favorites. There are tons of interactive activities, things you can do with your whole class. Reading, Math, Social Studies, Science and Spanish categories. Each activity requires no prep and takes 15-30 minutes. If you are lucky enough to have a smartboard, they also have some prepared lessons.
BBC Typing
This site is great for teaching kids to type. Its broken down into levels and then skills within each level. Its a cute, gamey site and the kids enjoy it. There is no tracking or reporting for student progress, but it is free and teaches the kids how to type!
Free Typing Games
for the older, more accomplished typists, this site offers lessons, games, and typing tests. There is a daily top scores listing on the site, which the kids always try to get on. Some schools have a white board where kids can post their high scores, and they all try to beat each others scores.
Math Playground
This site is only math. Its broken down by grade level and by math skill. The kids like to play the math games. Its not the most beautiful site, but the games are fun.
Seussville
who can resist Dr. Seuss? No one. This site does not disappoint. Games, puzzles, videos, books, and lots of fun activities based around Dr. Seuss books.
Sheppard Software
This site has TONS to do. Preschool/Kindergarten has its own area of the site and there are some great games/activities for the youngest students. Letters, numbers, shapes, colors, etc. The rest of the site is categorized and mainly for kids 1-6. Animals, Math, Geography, Science, Language Arts, History, Nutrition and more. I am sure you can find something on this site to go along with what you are learning in class.
Clifford the Big Red Dog
Cute site all about Clifford. Videos, games, printables. This site is created by Scholastic and is fun for younger students.
Atom Family
Science website with some simplified science concepts and experiments you can easily do with your class. All grades
Fun School
Another great site with TONS to do. There are many categories and lists of games and activities. They have a main site and then a Preschool area. Take a few minutes and explore the site. Your students will enjoy just about anything on this site.
BrainNook
Community for kids. Has games which allow students to play online with other. Teachers need to create an account, but it’s FREE. Input your student names, then the games are available. Students can compete with their classmates and earn points. Math and English
Count On
Fun Math games. Broken down into categories. Kids seem to like them.
Qubo
Fun site with games for younger children. Take some time and explore, there seems to be a lot of videos on various topics. The games include some with Babar the Elephant.
Sesame Street Online
Site all about Sesame Street. Videos, activities, games. Its really cute and kids love it.
ESL Kids
teach kids English using flashcards, games and printable worksheets. Play around with this, you can customize lists to match what you are teaching in class.
NASA for Kids
This is a science/space website and has some fun games for kids. Its broken down by grade level and has puzzles, games, videos and other fun areas to explore.
National Geographic Kids
Another great science website. Its a little difficult to find everything on this site, but there are tons of great videos, stories, games and activities that are all science related. Lots of animal information, which kids love.
Mr Nussbaum
Another site with tons of different games and activities. Kids love this site, and there are a lot of activities that teachers can do with their whole class. They have language arts, math, history, Geography, Science, Scavenger Hunts, Printables, Games and so much more! Broken down by grade level, which helps!
Moneyville
Fun, personalized Money ‘world’ where kids can learn about money.
Spelling City
You can subscribe and monitor activity, or use the free version. Cute spelling games. Enter in this weeks spelling words and have the kids play hangman, crosswords, or other games to practice the words.
America's Story
This is from the Library of Congress. Learn about history with fun activities and games. This is probably best for 3rd grade and up.
Amazing Space
nice site with all sorts of info on things in space. You can learn about cosmos, space exploration by watching short videos and playing games.
Khan Academy
It’s a series of youtube videos teaching ANYTHING you can think of. It’s really not aimed at young kids, but if there is something YOU want to learn, brush up on, etc – it’s probably there! Developed by educators and experts from all over the world.
Toy Theater
Weird name, but fun games. MANY choices, in all sorts of categories. Personally I think the math section is the best. But check it out.
BananaBoo
